I miss $2 subway rides, regardless of how far you’re going. Enjoy it while it lasts NYC!
I do not miss subway construction.
I miss grocery stores, conveniently located, packed to the rafters, only occasionally out of my favorite brand of cheese, grocery stores.
I do not miss carrying my groceries up four flights of stairs.
I miss the corner store being 30 seconds away as opposed to 5 minutes away.
I do not miss the local drunk who used to hang out in front.
I miss living on a grid. Do not take being able to walk the hypotenuse from point A to point B for granted. Right, left, right, left and then you arrive. As opposed to right, left, right, right, right, oops that’s a dead end, left, right, is that a private drive? right, left, left, uphill, downhill, more uphill, damn I’ve hit water.
I do not miss living on a 22.96 square mile island with another 1,634,795 people
I miss walking on the right. Or at least walking in implied lanes that everyone seems to understand. With Sydneysiders taking the left, and tourists taking the right, most of the time you feel as if you are aiming for a head on collision.
I do not miss NYC school children. To those of you who were, are or are in the process of raising said children, come on, you know what I’m talking about.
I miss Fahrenheit.
I do not miss the oven that was too small to fit a cookie sheet.
I miss diner breakfast. Egg dishes don’t need to be fancy and they don’t need to be more than $10.
I do not miss the view from my old window. The harbor is a vast improvement.
I miss bartenders who serve their drinks generously.
I do not miss having to tip.
I miss cabs being everywhere. Even if they almost hit you crossing the street, it’s nice to know that you could also catch a ride.
I do not miss endless high rises and massive canyon like avenues. Seeing sky should not be a novelty.
I miss the shower/bathtub combination. Or at least having a shower big enough to shave your legs in.
I do not miss the bathroom that barely would have qualified as a walk-in closet.
I miss heat.
I do not miss radiators.
I miss New Yorkers
I do not miss New Yorkers
And just so you don’t feel like I forgot about you, I miss my friends and family. Come visit.
We miss you too!
I miss my sister (always 8 years old)
Love, big sis!
Oh, and we miss $2 subway rides as well… frickin $2.25 now… stupid economic crisis… I’m starting to walk to work, dag nabbit!
yeah so did i tell you about the time that i ordered 4 pounds of bacon in a grocery store in Melbourne? Learn the lb to kg conversion. A little tip from me to you …
moving someplace new comes with mixed emotions. i pretty much hated every minute (ok, maybe every other minute half the time) i was in st. louis and yet, i sometimes miss it still.
i often think (and this relates more to the next post which i read first) that it’s less about where you are and more about who you are with. but don’t worry! friends come! i found you two!
btw – not sure if we’re gonna make it in the fall. there don’t seem to be any cheap tickets ACTUALLY available … but i’ll keep looking.
